Essential oils on a wick are at their best for roughly 6–10 weeks, so use your kit within that window for the truest scent, and keep it cool and dark between sessions — a fresh kit is always a quick reorder away.
How to train (and test yourself) Smell one tube at a time, for a few seconds. List out descriptors for yourself. This will help you build your internal vocabulary. To really hone your skills, keep a notebook just for this and go online to see what you can then compare it to the others in the family. Each tube is numbered on the base only, so you can smell blind, guess, and flip it over to check. A few minutes a day sharpens your nose faster than you'd expect.
